This a great post that deals with a critical problem businesses face today -- and I've seen firsthand. Email is so inexpensive and easy, many businesses are using it. But with the massive volume of emails and the advent of mobile email, the effectiveness of email is being diluted. I find myself unsubscribing more and more, as my Blackberry is inundated.

Since we're trying to build personal relationships based on trust, businesses should consider a different approach -- combining voice, email and video in an integrated fashion.

Marketers and sales leaders should consider this as they ponder new ways to drive sales ready leads.

I agree that email is over used and should not be relied on solely for connecting with prospects, but I disagree that one should rely primarily on voice. I for one, rarely answer my phone, and prefer to be communicated via email. For me it is a more efficient way for me to glean relevant information and then decide if I wish to engage further. I believe that different people respond to different mediums, and one must make use of multiple communications channels to reach people in a way that they prefer.

Great post, Jim. It's the combination of email and voice mail (along with persistence) that's required to increase connect rates in today's world. I like to leave a quick voice mail referencing the email for more information and ask the prospect to respond via phone or email. Many times I'll call a prospect and they'll email me back. Or they're responding to my emails from their BB when they're bored in a meeting. In both cases, they're responding to me, which is the whole point!
